Music

Hubbard Hall is a remarkable place to hear music. The space is intimate (the small hall seats only 150 people), the acoustics are wonderful, and the audience is always lively and attentive. The three foundations of our music program are:

Hubbard Hall Opera Theater

Building off of the rich tradition of arts in the Cambridge Valley, Hubbard Hall Opera Theater seeks to bring yet another element of culture to an already bustling center.  The mission of HHOT is to provide classically trained singers and instrumentalists in New England and upstate New York greater opportunities to create something beautiful close to home, while also giving rural audiences the chance to enjoy an opera without having to spend the night in a city to do so.

Georges Bizet

painting of Spanish dancerPeter Brook's 1981 re-working of Bizet's Carmen stays faithful to Prosper Mérimée's dark novel while foregoing the chorus and many of the lighter comic elements inherent in the popular opera. Brook does retain most of Bizet's celebrated music, albeit re-ordered, but his adaptation reduces the cast to just four singers: Carmen, Don Jose, Micaela, and Escamillo, as well as three speaking roles; Zuniga, Lillas Pastia and Garcia (Carmen's husband). This version hones our focus on a more intimate and no-frills tale as the tragedy of seduction, jealousy, lost freedom and lost love unravels and delivers a spicy and compact punch which can serve as a warning to anyone who has ever wanted everything in life and risked it all. This production will be sung in English and will feature a 15-piece orchestra.

Chamber Music

For over twenty years, Music from Salem has been bringing chamber music from concert halls in the United States and Europe to Hubbard Hall audiences. Named "Best Summer Music Series for Adventurous Programming" by Metroland, the musicians of Music from Salem offer programs of an exciting diversity and scope usually found only in major cities.

Children's Workshops and the annual Cello Seminar Concert offer a glimpse into the music making process and continue to nurture the relationship between musicians and listeners of all ages.

Community Music

This includes cabarets performed by members of the Theatre Company at Hubbard Hall, local musicians and other performers with connections to the area.

Local young musicians enjoy opportunities to perform in the excellent acoustics of the Hall with the benefit of a fine Steinway grand piano. The Battenkill Chorale considers Hubbard Hall its rehearsal home. Local traditional musicians host a weekly "Tune Jam," play for monthly contra dances and accompany the Hubbard Hall Irish Step Dancers.
