Music
Hubbard Hall is a remarkable place to hear music. The space is intimate (the small hall seats only 150 people), the acoustics are wonderful, and the audience is always lively and attentive. The three foundations of our music program are: Hubbard Hall Opera TheaterBuilding off of the rich tradition of arts in the Cambridge Valley, Hubbard Hall Opera Theater seeks to bring yet another element of culture to an already bustling center. The mission of HHOT is to provide classically trained singers and instrumentalists in New England and upstate New York greater opportunities to create something beautiful close to home, while also giving rural audiences the chance to enjoy an opera without having to spend the night in a city to do so. HHOT plunges into its first season with a production of Mozart’s La scuola degli amanti (The School for Lovers), better known as Cosi fan tutte (All Women Do It). This opera is famous for some of the genres’ greatest ensemble works and pairs Mozart’s quintessentially vibrant music with the libretto of his best collaborator, Lorenzo Da Ponte. The plot is rooted in a cynical comedy of errors wherein each character is destined to expose infidelity in all its guises. With gambols and ruses Cosi fan tutte presents the limits and shortcomings of all relationships with a sardonic humor in a way that is still socially relevant and would make any young lover cringe, laugh at himself (or herself), and then hopefully take the lesson home. As in the origins of the theater, the Hall will host a twenty piece orchestra to complement six Divas and Divos who will bring a taste of Italian melodrama to the forests and fields of Cambridge, NY. from Salem, a chamber music organization of world class musicians who
are dedicated to working on the nuances so often lost in large performance
venues. These artists travel from Europe and across the US to work intensively
on preparing programs in the bucolic, peaceful setting of a farm in Salem,
NY and perform them in Hubbard Hall. Community MusicThis includes cabarets performed by members of the Theatre Company at Hubbard Hall, local musicians and singers such as Lo Faber, Todd Pasternack (marlow), Art Lande, Bruce Williamson and pianist Richard Cherry, and performers with family or friend connections to the area (Sigard Rascher, the father of the classical saxophone, lived in the area, and when the Rascher Quartet from Germany has been on US tours, they often stopped for a concert in Hubbard Hall). |
