I have been doing Irish Step Dancing for about 5 years. In Irish Step the teacher is Darcy May. She is really awesome. She cares about all of her dancers too. If you make a mistake she will stop the class and work with you for a couple of minutes just trying to help you to “get it right” but also to feel comfortable. Having a place where you dance freely while learning different steps, jigs, and reels is really important to me.
At the recital all of the classes come together and form one performance all together everyone. That is really important to me also. If you make a mistake nobody cares! Darcy cares, but she doesn’t get all annoyed or anything. I have a hard time with the hornpipe and hard shoe. Your friends and fellow dancers will just give you an encouraging smile that will inspire you to maybe perform the step correctly.
Dancing is like reading to me. I love to read. But I have to find a book that I really like in order to stay with it. With dance you find a dance you love and you join. It means a lot to me to have a teacher who really cares and is actually interested in what she does. That is also encouraging for me. It is also sort of like cake. You can’t help yourself, you just want to keep coming back for more. No matter if the steps are difficult or require great effort, dancing is so much fun to do. It is really cool to be learning a dance on Friday, practice it all week and then come back and see the giant smile on your teacher’s face when you do it perfectly.
In conclusion, dancing at Hubbard Hall provides me with a tremendous challenge and a tremendous reward. Dancing is a big part of my life, and it really means a lot to me.
